Sheena Bora murder: If Indrani doesn't confess, will expose real reason behind crime, says son

Indrani Mukerjea is in custody of Mumbai police for daughter Sheena's murder

Mumbai: Murdered Sheena Bora was the daughter of former INX News founder Indrani Mukerjea and not her sister as believed, Mumbai cops have said.

Wife of former STAR India chief Peter Mukerjea, Indrani, 43, was arrested Tuesday after a loyal family driver led the police to her, confessing that he had killed Sheena in 2012 at his employer’s bidding.

Sheena Bora’s body was dumped in the forests of Raigad, nearly 100 kilometres from Mumbai in 2012. The Raigad police had found the body then but could not establish its identity. The Mumbai police joined the dots this week before taking Indrani into custody.

It is alleged Indrani killed her daughter over a property dispute but police sources say she was unhappy over Sheena’s alleged affair with Rahul, Peter’s son by a previous marriage.

Sheena was 24 when she was murdered.

Sheena’s brother Mikhael told a television channel that Indrani was their biological mother. He said they were brought up by their maternal grandparents.

The Telegraph reported: “The family source said Indrani had introduced Sheena to Mumbai society as her sister. But, the source said, Sheena and a younger boy were born to Indrani when she was in a relationship with a person who divided his time between Calcutta and Tripura. The family friend said Indrani was married to another person with interests in Calcutta and Jamshedpur before she became Peter's wife.”

Mikhael told ANI: “I don't believe that Sheena was killed over a property dispute. If Indrani Mukerjea doesn't admit to her crime, I will tell the police the exact reason for the murder.”

He alleged Indrani had not given the family any money since last September, telling ANI, “If she doesn't admit to her crime, I will place evidence before the police.”

In a detailed interview to a television channel, Mikhael said: “We were born in Guwahati and brought up by our grandparents. Our mom was not with us from our birth. Sheena went to Mumbai for higher studies and stayed on. She studied in St. Xaviers and then joined a corporate firm in the human resources department. She last came to Guwahati in 2012 to attend a close friend’s wedding. When I didn’t hear from her later, I asked my mother where she was. In the USA, I was told.”

He added Sheena had many fights with their mother. “It can be biologically proved she is our mother. I want justice for Sheena,” Mikhael said.

Meanwhile, Peter Mukherjea told NDTV he was “dumbstruck and shocked” that the young woman his wife is accused of killing was not her sister but daughter.

"I never took the rumours (that Sheena was his wife's daughter) seriously when I heard them four years ago, but now it is coming from credible sources, the police," Peter Mukherjea told NDTV.

The Telegraph reported the same quoting family friends. The report further stated: “After Indrani married Peter, who made a name for himself at the helm of STAR India and during whose tenure the blockbuster Kaun Banega Crorepati was launched, Sheena moved in with the family. The family friend said Sheena, who was known as Indrani's sister, became close to Peter's son from an earlier marriage. It is not clear whether the alleged relationship played any role in Sheena's death. The police started treating Indrani as a "person of interest" after they were tipped off that her driver Shyam Rai had been seen frequenting the place in Raigad from where Sheena's body was found.”

Indrani and her driver have been charged under sections 302 (murder), 201 (disposing evidence or giving false statements), 363 (kidnapping) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC. She is in police custody till August 31.

Indrani is a human resources consultant and co-founder of a company that later became 9X media.

The Telegraph reported: “Sheena's last Facebook post was in December 2011 and she was not seen since. When some friends had asked about Sheena's whereabouts, they said, they were told that she was abroad for some treatment. After her studies, Sheena used to work with a well-known company.”
