Samsung's latest smartphone won't break if you drop it

The Galaxy S8 Active embraces military grade protection while retaining flagship internals.

While this may be a smartphone that didn’t attract as much attention as the standard Galaxy S8 prior to launch, the Galaxy S8 Active is an important product for Samsung in the United States. The S8 Active is a major upgrade from last year’s Galaxy S7 Active, especially when it comes to design.

The S8 Active takes a leaf out of the Galaxy S8’s design book. However, there are no curved edges here — the 5.8-inch Infinity Display with an 18.5:9 ratio has very thin bezels to the side and is flat. It is in fact very similar to LG G6 in aesthetics. The sides sport a bumper case to protect the device from shocks and drops.

The S8 Active is, however, more than just sustaining drops and shocks. The smartphone adheres to MIL-STF-810G military standard for providing high resistance to mechanical damage and shock. The device is also IP68 certified, which means its water and dust resistant as well.

Apart from the sturdy build, the S8 Active houses the same internals as the US-spec Galaxy S8 — a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset along with 4GB RAM and 64GB onboard storage. There’s a 12MP dual pixel rear camera with a f/1.7 aperture with an 8MP selfie camera. The S8 Active is powered by a 4000mAh battery.

The S8 Active is available for $850 in the US with AT&T only can be pre-booked at the moment.
