Sheena Bora murder case: Did Pen police tear FIR after body was found?

The senior officer also instructed that no further action would be taken

Mumbai: It has emerged from the inquiry of three police officials attached to the Pen police station in 2012 that the Pen police had recorded on a piece of paper all the details of the case that are necessary to register an FIR. But, for some reason they reportedly tore the paper after disposing off the body.

A source said that sometimes the police take down information required for an FIR on a rough paper, which is called a kachcha FIR, and later register the official FIR. However, Pen police officials chose not to register FIR or even accidental death report after preparing the kachcha FIR. It is also learnt that the senior officer instructed that no further action would be taken.

Director Sanjeev Dayal did not confirm or deny the reports. When asked whether the reports of the kachcha FIR being torn by the officials were true, Mr Dayal said, “Our inquiry is still going on and until then we can’t say anything. After the investigation report comes out we can give an answer.”

A week after the Mumbai police arrested Indrani Mukerjea for killing her daughter Sheena Bora in 2012, the DGP’s office has asked the then Raigad superintendent of police, R.D. Shinde and two other officials, to explain their failure to follow up the case. Two police officials —Pradeep Chavan and then police inspector Suresh Mirghe’s statements were recorded on Wednesday and Mr Shinde’s statement will be recorded till Thursday.

According to sources from the Raigad police, constables made the kachcha FIR copy after the police team carried out the panchnama of the body that was found in May 2012. But after that suddenly one of the police officials of three ordered that it be destroyed.

The police officer said that according to Indrani’s statement recorded by the Khar police, Sheena was killed on April 23, 2012 and her half-burnt body was dumped in a forest near Pen on April 24. When villagers noticed the body a month later, on May 23, they brought it to the notice of Pen police. Then Mr Chavan and Mr Mirghe visited the spot, collected parts of the body and sent them to JJ Hospital for analysis and didn’t even collect the report after that. They buried the body on the spot and the incident was not recorded in the police station.
