Chinese man sells newborn daughter for iPhone, wife backs decision

The toddler's mother too supported her husband's decision of selling the baby.

In a weird craze for owning an iPhone, a Chinese man has reportedly sold his newborn daughter in exchange of money to buy an iPhone and a motorbike, according to a media report.

The father, 19, residing in the south eastern Chinese province of Fujian, sold his 18-day old baby girl for 23, 000 Yuan.

After meeting the buyer on a social networking website, the man confirmed the deal.

The toddler's mother too supported her husband's decision to sell the baby. The couple had met at work in 2013 and later decided to get married. The woman had worked at temporary position at a few places while the husband mostly spent his time at various cyber cafes.

Post marriage, the couple who were both too young to raise a baby, found it difficult to support their living and the news of the woman's unwanted pregnancy left them in shock.

Burdened with the newborn daughters expenses and incapable of funding her, the father decided to exchange his baby for money, and thus fulfill his dreams of buying things that were earlier unaffordable.

The buyer, who had bought the newborn for his sister, surrendered to police who then arrested the toddler's father. He told police that he had threatened his wife who fled away after finding a job in another city.

However, police tracked her down and arrested her. She told police that she was herself adopted and people in her hometown usually gave away their children to others in order to raise them, adding that she did not know it was illegal.

The father of the girl was sentenced to three years in prison whereas the mother faced two and half years in prison.
