Video: Syrian breaks down while rescuing newborn from rubble of bombed building

While he continues to hold the baby, rescuers around him begin to wipe the dust and blood stains that covered the infant's face.

Idlib: A rescue worker in Syria was captured on camera breaking into tears, minutes after he rescued a newborn girl from the rubble of a bombed neighbourhood in Idlib on Thursday.

The White Helmets volunteer, identified as Abu Kifah, had pulled the girl to safety after desperately digging around the rubble for survivors. Kifah in the video can be seen cradling the baby close to him and bursting into tears, soon after the two of them were rushed into an ambulance.

While he continues to hold the baby, rescuers around him begin to wipe the dust and blood stains that covered the infant’s face.

BBC anchor Kate Silverston was so overwhelmed by the video that she cried on live television. She had begun reading a sports story but tears could be seen welling in her eyes.

She later took to Twitter and explained that even though anchors are expected to not show any emotions, she is only human.

'To all of you sending thoughts - thank you - no words really - my job to be inscrutable & impartial but I am also human,' she tweeted.

A Syrian opposition monitoring group that tracks Syria's civil war says a year of Russian airstrikes have killed more than 9,000 people in the war-torn country.

On September 30 last year, Russia began an air campaign backing forces of the Syrian President Bashar Assad and turning the balance of power in his favor.
