Munich shooting: Killer was obsessed with mass killings

Police said the shooter, a student who was born and raised in Munich.

Munich: The gunman who killed nine people in a shooting spree at a shopping centre in Munich was obsessed with mass shootings, according to police. The gunman who has been identified as Ali David Sonboly, an 18-year-old German-Iranian, has no criminal record they said.

Munich police chief Hubertus Andrae said during a new conference they had found “no evidence” of links to ISIS. He said the attack appears to be a “classic shooting rampage” and was not an act of terrorism, the Independent reported.

He said police were working on the assumption the attacker wanted to mark the fifth anniversary of another mass shooting in Norway, when right-wing extremist Anders Breivik killed 77 people. He also said the crime and perpetrator had “absolutely no” link to the issue of refugees.

Police said the shooter, a student who was born and raised in Munich, had been in psychiatric care and was treated for depression. Prosecutor Steinkraus Koch told the news conference the suspect had a book titled: Why Kids Kill: Inside the Minds of School Shooters.

It was also revealed that he had lured his victims to a McDonald’s after hacking a Facebook account and posting a message offering free fast food, the Daily Mail said. The pre-prepared post was sent from a young woman’s account just hours before the mayhem broke out.
