In Germany, proposed law forbids moms from hiding biological father's identity

The minister aims to provide justice to 'false' fathers who are trapped by their wives into providing financial assistance to the child.

Berlin: A proposed law in Germany, if passed, would require mothers to reveal names and details of the men they had slept with in specific paternity cases involving finance for child support.

Heiko Maas, Justice Minister, has suggested that this measure would deliver justice to those fathers who have been made to believe by their wives that they are the parent of the child. Once the identity of the biological father of the child is established, the men can then seek monetary compensation for raising the kid.

In such cases, the mother would be asked to give out the details of the men she had slept with in the past, to determine the actual father of the child.

With this proposed law, the minister aims to provide justice to 'false' fathers who are trapped by their wives into providing financial assistance to the child.

The law would make sure that the legal rights of the biological father and mother would be protected. It would also allow men to claim maintainence and money from the biological father of the child for a period of at least two years.

A case dealing with a similar situation had been in the German High Court in March 2015 where a mother had refused to name her lover with whom she had a child. The matter came to light when during investigation, the court discovered that the woman's husband might not be the biological father of her child and had a right to claim money for child support.
