Watch: iPhone X FaceID hacked using 3D printed face, again

Apple calims that the facial recognition tech is more secure than the TouchID, but evidence keeps landing continuously to prove otherwise.

Apple has been touting its FaceID as the most advanced mobile security system since the advent of iPhone X. The company has claimed that the facial recognition tech is more secure than the TouchID, but evidence keeps landing continuously to prove otherwise.

Vietnamese cybersecurity firm Bkav, who previously created a mask that was capable of breaching Face ID, has come up with another project that it calls ‘artificial twin’ and demonstrates that it’s very easy to bypass the biometric system on the new flagship.

To show how effective this new mask is, the company reset FaceID settings and re-enrolled the face in the iPhone X, which goes on to prove that artificial twin mask can unlock the phone even when held in hand.

The mask was developed using a 3D printer and stone powder, with the eyes made of 2D infrared images that were glued to the model.

Bkav believes Apple is relying too much on the FaceID’s AI and the $150 can be used to dig personal secrets from public figures, political leaders, billionaires etc. The firm also says that fingerprint scanner is still the best way to keep the intruders from breaking into your phone.

This isn’t the first time the FaceID got tricked. Mashable tested the feature on identical twins by making one register his face on the iPhone X, verify that he could unlock the phone by looking at it and then hand the locked device to his identical twin brother. The FaceID failed to tell the difference and unlocked the phone.
