ASUS's smart lappies for smart workers

When smartphone shakes hands with laptop, and the result is amazing.

Ultra-slim, bezel-less, infinity display, lightweight — these are features that most modern smart phones come with. What if some of these features made their way into good old laptops? Except cameras, every other feature of a smart phone can be incorporated in the 'lappie', making it cooler, more useful and more attractive to look and hold. Asus has done just that, with its two latest festive offerings — the VivoBook S 15 and the ZenBook UX430.

With a deliberate focus on mobility, performance and style — the three tick-boxes for any smart phone, the Asus VivoBook S15 comes longer battery life than most lappies, along with an ergonomically superior keyboard. Housed in an aluminum chasis, and all of 1.7mm thickness, the VivoBook S 515 weighs just 1.7kg. The USP of this device is its 15.6 inch NanoEdge display — a 7.8mm ultra-thin bezel, with IPS 178-degree wide view display, with an 80% screen-to-body ratio.

Powered by the Intel i7 processor, along with a GeForce MX150 graphics card, the device comes with 16 GB RAM plus a hybrid 1TB hard drive + 128GB solid state drive combo. The latter, helps fast boot up, while the former provides ample storage. Asus claims that the VivoBook charges to 60% power in 49 minutes, again a feature that is synonymous with smart phones. The device comes built-in with Asus SonicMaster sound module, that provides a wider range of frequencies with deeper bass. It is preloaded with the high end Windows 10 Pro. The VivoBook comes in a Icicle Gold metallic finish, and features one USB Type C, A USB 3.0 port and two USB 2.0 ports, one HDMI port, and Bluetooth 4.2. It is priced at Rs 59,990 and is currently available across online and offline outlets.

The second offering from Asus — the ZenBook UX 430 is lighter than the VivoBook and weighs just 1.25kg and comes with a sandblasted metal keyboard surface. It provides a much superior audio experience thanks to in-built Harman/Kardon audio along with Asus' own Smart Amp technology. Most other specs are similar to the VivoBook (size-wise it is smaller at 14 inches), while the UX 430 is a more stylish, premium looking device. It is priced starting at Rs 74,990 and you would need a really light and thin laptop to justify the price.
