Google's November update gives the Pixel 2 a second chance

The November security patch brings fixes to clicking noise and a new Saturated' colour mode to the Pixel 2 smartphones.

Since Google’s Pixel 2 started shipping out to the world, several users have been complaining about the phone’s display as well issue in its audio. The Pixel 2 XL has in fact received a substantial amount of bashing from the press and consumers alike for opting to go for a ‘seemingly average’ OLED panel in a flagship class smartphone. Google certainly doesn’t like it and therefore has rolled out fixes for these reported issues in the November security update.

The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL have started receiving the November security patch. The latest update irons out a lot of bugs and brings in some fine under-the-hood improvements. The biggest ones, however, are the fixes for the audio crackling noise on both the Pixel 2 models and the colour profile on the Pixel 2 XL’s OLED panel.

The new patch introduces a new ‘Saturated’ colour profile in the Pixel 2 XL’s display settings. The new colour profile enhances the colour tones, making them vibrant and saturated. Users still have the option to go back to the sRGB colour format that Google takes to be the standard user should follow. “The saturated mode puts the display into an unmanaged configuration, similar to how the Pixel 1 operates. The colours will be more saturated and vibrant, but less accurate (similar to most other smartphones which display more vibrant colours): we give consumers the option to choose the colour saturation,” said Google on their blog.

The update also brings fading navigation buttons to the Pixel 2, which Google believes will help reduce the OLED burn-in. Google itself says that OLED displays experience some degree of decay over time, which is why they will be looking for more ways to “maximize the life of your Pixel screen.”

The November security update also brings the KRACK Wi-Fi fix (read about it here) to both the Pixel 2 smartphones. If you haven’t received the update yet, check your software update from the settings menu and download it once it shows up.
