Who says older people can’t understand the advancing technology? Challenging the assumed norms of our tech-savvy society, a Japan-based, 81-year-old Masako Wakamiya recently created an app that shows people the correct way to place their traditional doll displays.
The app is created with the purpose of honouring the age-old tradition of Hinamatsuri (Girls’ Day outside of Japan). The app essentially teaches people the right way of staging their traditional doll displays for the festival.

The app is called Hinadan, which combines words hina meaning doll and dan meaning tier. Players are asked to place a total of 12 dolls in their respective positions on a standard display with four tiers. Users reach the final stage after arranging the dolls in the correct spots.
Wakamiya also has a blog (in Japanese and English languages) wherein she shares clips from her travels and also teaches people how to use Excel to make art. Apart from, she also featured at a TEDx talk in Tokyo, where she talked about active ageing in the digital world.
