CEIR-tech helps TS police recover 2,219 missing mobile devices

HYDERABAD: The Telangana police, with the assistance of the telecommunications department (DoT), have traced 2,219 mobile phones that were lost or went missing, by using the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) technology, in the last two months. The phones have been handed over to their owners.

The DoT-developed CEIR portal, which is intended to help curb the theft of mobiles and counterfeit mobiles, began its Telangana services on April 19. Nearly 60 personnel were provided training and CEIR user IDs were distributed to all 780 police stations under 31 police units.

Telangana state was selected for the pilot project of the portal, which was initially guided by S.M. Vijay Kumar from the intelligence department.

Police officials said that using CEIR has helped trace more than 1,000 lost or missing mobiles in the first month of its launch and another 1,160 mobiles in 25 days.

Although all police units have contributed to tracing mobile phones, the major contributions have come from Cyberabad commissionerate with 300 mobile devices, Warangal commissionerate (175), Rachakonda (148) and Kamareddy district (131 mobile devices).
