In what seems like history repeating itself once again, HMD Global led Nokia has signed a deal with one of its old mate responsible for making some iconic Nokia handsets – Carl Zeiss. Yes, the Nokia-Carl ZEISS combo is back for making some great camera smartphones.
With this partnership, Nokia aims to set new imaging standards in the smartphone industry. The news comes at a time when the tech industry is afloat with rumours of a flagship Nokia 9 smartphone expected to house a dual camera sensor that will set the benchmark for smartphone cameras, a mantle which is currently owned by HTC’s U11 flagship smartphone.
"With a joint ambition to advance the quality of the total imaging experience on smartphones spanning the entire ecosystem from software, services, through to screen quality, and optic design, the partnership will see ZEISS and HMD Global co-develop standard-defining imaging capabilities and will bring the ZEISS brand back to Nokia smartphones," said HMD Global.
Smartphone enthusiasts may remember the Nokia phones of yesteryears sporting Carl ZEISS branded camera modules at the back. The first Nokia phone to sport a Carl ZEISS camera unit was the Nokia N90 launched in 2005. Over the years, the both the companies worked on the camera to improve the benchmark in the smartphone camera segment, with the astonishing 41MP unit on the Nokia 808 PureView. Some of the last Nokia smartphones to sport Carl ZEISS optics were the Lumia 920, the Lumia 1020 and the Lumia 1520 before the Microsoft pulled the plug on the Finnish phone manufacturing brand.
