The selectors have also included Mohammad Shami in the 17-member squad to strengthen the pace department. After the Test series, starting on January 5, India will play six ODIs from February 1 and three Twenty20 Internationals.

Suresh Raina who cleared the Yo-Yo test at the NCA in Bengaluru recently was ignored again along with Yuvraj Singh. There was no place for spinners R. Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. “Wrist spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal have been winning games for us, so they deserve an extended run. Axar Patel is also doing well as finger spinner. We wanted to increase spin bench strength and today we have 5-6 quality spin bowlers. However this is not end of road for Ashwin and Jadeja in shorter format,” chief selector MSK Prasad said.

Squad: Virat Kohli (Captain), Rohit Sharma (VC), Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer, Kedar Jadhav, Manish Pandey, Dinesh Karthik, MS Dhoni (WK), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammad Shami, Shardul Thakur
