Indian Pacer Shami Gets Bail in Domestic Violence Case Ahead of World Cup

Kolkata: In a major relief to Indian cricketer Mohammad Shami ahead of the World Cup tournament, the Alipore Court in the city granted him bail on Tuesday in a case of domestic violence filed by his estranged wife Hasin Jahan against him five years ago.

In the morning, Shami appeared at the court for the first time. He was accompanied by his elder brother Mohammad Hasim, another accused in the case. Both prayed for bail which was later granted, said Shami's lawyer Selim Rahman.

On August 23, additional district judge of the court directed the 33-year-old fast bowler to appear before him physically within 30 days of his order and also gave him a scope to apply for his bail from the trial court since the Kolkata police earlier filed it's chargesheet in the case.

On March 8 in 2018, Hasin lodged an FIR at the Jadavpur police station in south eastern parts of the city, accusing Shami and Hasim of domestic violence. A year later, the additional judicial magistrate of the Alipore Court issued an arrest warrant against the pacer.

But the district judge of the same court put a stay on the order. Challenging the district court's order, Hasin later moved the Calcutta High Court which however upheld the lower court's order. She later moved the Supreme Court which recently directed the district court to dispose the matter within a month after hearing both sides.
