Mahela Jayawardene meets SLC officials, No indication of resignation

Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene, who has been working as a consultant for the teams hold discussions with the Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) officials on Tuesday, it is learnt.

According to highly placed sources, 47-year-old Mahela discussed the reasons for the team's debacle in the recent World Cup and recommended future plans for improving and encouraging cricket in the country.. Mahela had travelled with the national team to India for World Cup.

"His contract runs for another three months and he didn't indicate resigning from the post", a source, who attended the meeting said.

"We are considering hiring the services of former captain and all-rounder Sanath Jayasuriya for a similar post. If all goes well and Sanath accepts the responsibilities, he will be the full-time consultant, unlike Mahela. Sanath will also monitor the performance of the coaching staff", the source added.

The sports minister has appointed the five-member national selection panel headed by Upul Tharanga.

The SLC management had sent a list of 11 candidates for the post including the names of a few members like chairman Pramodya Wickramasinghe from the last selection committee, it is understood.

"The minister wanted new faces in the team, particularly after the debacle in the World Cup. The minister observed that the last panel was experimenting with the composition of the team and there was no accountability", the source said.
