Hashim Amla eclipses Virat Kohli to become fastest cricketer to score 24 tons

Hashim Amla became the fastest batsman to score 24 centuries in ODI cricket, ahead of India captain Virat Kohli.

Centurion: South Africa batsman Hashim Amla broke India captain Virat Kohli’s record as he smashed his way to 154 runs off just 134 deliveries to help South Africa thrash Sri Lanka 5-0 in their home ODI series.

Amla, who has been one of South Africa’s most consistent top order batsmen over the years, notched up the 24th ODI century of his career with that154.

By scoring this century, Amla became the fastest batsman to score 24 centuries in ODI cricket, ahead of a number of legendary players.

While Kohli took 161 innings to score 24 tons, Amla got to the mark considerably faster, having played only 142 innings. The Proteas star now leads the list that also comprises star players like AB de Villiers (192), Sachin Tendulkar (219), and Ricky Ponting (278).

Interestingly, he also became the seventh member of an elite club of cricketers, who have scored 50 or more centuries in international cricket (across all formats of the game).

Amla joined the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Kumar Sangakkara, Jacques Kallis, Mahela Jayawardene, and Brian Lara in this elite club.
