BJD-BJP Fail to Seal Deal in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Negotiations for an alliance between Odisha's ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the BJP ahead of the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections have collapsed. BJP Odisha unit president Manmohan Samal declared on Friday that the party would contest all 21 Lok Sabha seats and 147 Assembly segments.

In a social media statement, Samal cited concerns regarding the efficacy of welfare schemes and issues related to Odisha's identity and interests.

The BJD is yet to respond to the BJP's unilateral decision. Two parties had formed a coalition in 1998, which dissolved in 2009 due to seat-sharing disputes.

In 2014, the BJP made notable gains, securing eight Lok Sabha and 23 Assembly seats. With this recent announcement, the BJP aims to challenge the BJD's 24-year-old grip on power in Odisha.

BJP election-in-charge Vijaypal Singh Tomar vowed to address issues such as rising crime and corruption, aiming to unseat the BJD from power. Meanwhile, BJP Lok Sabha member Aparajita Sarangi revealed that the BJD had proposed an alliance, which was rejected by the BJP leadership.
