Hyderabad: The Hyderabad airport on Wednesday started enhancing its approach runways with a Category II (CAT-II) instrument landing system (ILS) to allow flights to land safely in conditions of low visibility.
The move comes after the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) asked six Metro airports, including Hyderabad, to gear up to combat flight delays due to foggy conditions, besides enhancing CISF personnel and setting up a war room.
Sources said that currently, the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport is equipped with CAT-I, whereas the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi is equipped with CAT-III technology.
Sources at the RGI Airport said that the equipment was received, with technical experts working on the installation process and other required measures. Airlines are also working towards better passenger management, following the DGCA directives, they said.
Airline managements are seeing to it that passengers do not suffer delays and in case they do, are not locked in cabins or loading docks and are served food, following an incident at the Mumbai airport wherein passengers were locked within an aerobridge with flight entry disallowed and passengers unable to return to the terminal either.
