V M Sudheeran makes U-turn on K Babu

Vigilance's disproportionate asset case to take political vengeance

Thiruvananthapuram: KPCC president V.M. Sudheeran, who earlier took a stand against the party backing former minister K. Babu in the bar bribery case, has made a U-turn. On Sunday, he told reporters here that the Vigilance booked a case for disproportionate assets against Mr Babu to take political vengeance. Briefing media after a meeting of the political affairs committee of the Congress party, he alleged that the vigilance was not able to come out with any convincing proof.

"My response got delayed as I wanted more clarity on the issue. I didn't want to react in a hurry," he said. However, he did not give a direct answer to the question whether he supported Mr Babu. He just said he had made everything clear. To a question on footage of Babu's wife transferring "evidence" from his locker, he said it was a move to cover the lapses on the part of the vigilance.

He had been keeping a discreet silence over the issue so far giving rise to criticisms in the party. Even in the UDF meeting earlier, he was firm that he would react only later despite the prodding by Muslim League leader P. K. Kunhalikutty. "Since the topic is serious, the party will announce its opinion after the PAC meeting. I have apprised the KPCC of my stand," he had said earlier.
