Mahila Congress president Bindu Krishna thanks Rahul Gandhi for her post

The overcrowded constituency committees will be reconstituted by increasing their number and limiting members to 15.

KOLLAM: Mahila Congress (Kerala) president Bindu Krishna, the only woman among the newly-appointed district chiefs of the Congress party, has thanked vice-president Rahul Gandhi for her elevation. Ms Krishna, who assumed office as the Kollam District Congress Committee president on Sunday in the presence of KPCC president V.M. Sudheeran, said it was made possible only for Gandhi's intervention and not by any group leaders in the state. "I am not here on account of any of groups," she told reporters here on Thursday.

"Rahul Gandhi and the AICC intervened to give women representation in the leadership and hence I got the position." Indirectly pointing at the fatal factionalism prevalent in the district, she said she would strive hard to bring all working members under one umbrella, reconstituting committees if necessary. "There were differences of opinion among earlier Congress leaders including Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Subhash Chandra Bose. But they ironed them out and forged ahead. I will take all into confidence and lead the party (into a stronger position)," she said. The overcrowded constituency committees will be reconstituted by increasing their number and limiting members to 15.

On the 'A' faction leaders' resentment over her appointment, she said it was the responsibility of a president to bring them together "like a mother equally caring for all of her children." She said she would be accessible to all members, irrespective of group loyalties. "The Congress party is learning from its mistakes and is correcting itself even at the national level," she said. Ms Krishna wanted the state government to take a "champion role" in ensuring press freedom. "The government has failed to interfere in ensuring press freedom at courts."
