LDF wins majority in Kerala local body elections

LDF won 10 of the 14 wards for which bypolls were held on Friday across eight districts.

Thiruvananthapuram: The ruling LDF continued its winning streak that began with Assembly elections by securing 10 of the 14 wards for which bypolls were held on Friday across eight districts. The UDF won 3 and BJP 1.

While the LDF wrested three seats from the UDF, the latter snatched the prestigious Areekkad ward from where former mayor V.K.C. Mammad Koya won in 2015. He resigned following his election to Assembly in May 2016.

The LDF candidates won from the following wards in Thiruvananthapuram district; Kizhuvilam ward Sreekantan Nair won by a majority of 1,993 votes, in Maruthamcode, Sunitha Rani got elected by 88 votes, Seemanthapuram, Rajni Ranjith won by 311 votes and from Padinjaatela ward Siddiqe M. won by 137 votes.

In Komma district, LDF’s M. Naushad won from Kayyalakkal division of Kollam Corporation by 465 votes. He secured 2,046 votes out of a total of 4,428 votes polled while Kolloorvila Nasimudeen of UDF managed to bag 1,581 votes. The BJP candidate Abdul Massi was in the sixth position securing 116 votes.

In Ambatham Mile ward of Idukki district Bincy Roy won by 48 votes, in Kaipamangalam ward in Thrissur district G. Vishnupappan won by 6,880 votes, Sindhu Manoj secured Njamanegad ward by 27 votes, from Pullur East K. Jayarajan won by 11 votes and in Wayanad district’s Thirunelli ward Satheeshkumar won by 2,924 votes.

The UDF candidates who won are; Bijumon Thomas by 14 votes from Idukki district’s Calvary Mount ward, Kozhikode Areekkad – Sayyid Muhammad Shameel S.V. won by 416 votes and Kasarogd’s Ayiti ward Tahasira K.V. won by 180 votes.

BJP retained the Meparambu ward in Palakkad district with its candidate Shanthi V.A. wining by 182 votes.

LDF wrested Seemanthapuram, Padinjatela ward from UDF and Amabtham Mile in Idukki district. In Areekad, UDF supported independent Sayyid defeated LDF candidate T. Moideen Koya by a margin of 416 votes.

UDF’s victory, however will not affect the rule in the Corporation as LDF enjoys a definite majority. In 2015, Mr Mammad Koya defeated Mr Muhammad Shameel by 202 votes.

BJP candidate T. Anil Kumar secured 396 votes which is six votes more compared to previous elections.
