Chennai: Women voters outnumbered men in the polling that ended on Monday, chief electoral officer Rajesh Lakhoni said on Tuesday. Declaring the state's final poll percentage as 74.26 per cent, he said counting in all the 68 secured stations would commence as per the schedule on May 19 with postal votes.
In the concluded polls, 4.28 crores people voted including 2,12,44,129 women voters. About 4 lakh more women turned up when compared to men, he said. A re-poll has been ordered on Wednesday at a booth in Ramnad following damage to an EVM machine, he added.
According to public election department sources, districts including Chennai, Coimbatore and Tiruchy brought down the state's polling percentage and women voters in these districts also turned out less in numbers. In Chennai, R K Nagar and Kolathur saw more women voters voting when compared to other constituencies.
Chief minister Jayalalithaa's R K Nagar saw 87,443 women voters and 85,368 men voters voting. Kolathur where DMK leader M.K. Stalin is contesting also saw more women voters exercising their democratic rights. Kolathur recorded 85,308 women votes and 81,963 men votes.
Interestingly, Vellore district with 13 assembly constituencies saw more women voting. Of the total 13 assembly seats, women voted more than their male counter parts in ten assembly constituencies.
