CPM fears Mexit' gain for BJP

Kodiyeri cautions against BJP taking advantage of Mani exit

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has said the Left forces should guard against BJP take advantage of the political situation arising out of K.M. Mani's exit from UDF. Kodiyeri said BJP should not be permitted to become the beneficiary of UDF disintegration. Even though UDF is on the verge of disintegration, the Congress led front and LDF continue to be the two major political formations in the state.

The BJP which fought the elections under NDA could manage to get only one seat. Under these circumstances the Sangh Parivar should not be allowed to cash in on UDF crisis. In an article in party mouthpiece Deshabhimani, the CPM state secretary said the LDF was yet to become the permanent organisation of the majority of people. This is evident from the fact that barring few occasions, LDF has not been able to secure more than 50 per cent votes.

Kodiyeri said though the LDF had won 91 seats in the recent elections, in terms of vote percentage it had only four per cent votes more than the UDF at 43.35 per cent. “This is a not sufficient. The CPM and LDF will have to emerge as a political force with majority support. This is the qualitative change that we are looking forward to,” he said and added that efforts should be made to attract the masses which are still rallying behind the rival parties.

Left opens doors for IUML, too?

After keeping its doors open to Kerala Congress for issue based cooperation, CPM has now hinted at cooperating with the Muslim League at the state level. An editorial in party mouthpiece Deshabhimani, mocked at Congress saying that the party leadership which was initially fretting and fuming over K.M. Mani’s decision to quit UDF, was now trying to mollify the Pala strongman.

The Congress leaders including Ramesh Chennithala and V.M. Sudheeran have now adopted a soft approach towards Mani fearing that other allies might also take a tough stand.Despite quitting UDF, the Kerala Congress is confident of retaining its position as independent political force in central Kerala. There are reports that even Muslim League is nursing somewhat similar aspirations in Malabar region, the editorial said.

The party said the exit of Kerala Congress had brought an end to the three decades old anti Marxist politics. Under these circumstances the UDF allies should conduct self introspection. The editorial said that at the recent UDF meeting, the JDU, RSP and CMP (C P John) had hit out at the Congress holding it responsible for their complete decimation in the recent Assembly polls.
