Thiruvananthapuram: Onam will be sweet for most politicians who will spend the day with their families. But not BJP state president P.S. Sreedharan Pillai, who will sweat it out in Pala in the hope of giving an edge to NDA candidate N. Hari in the by-election.
Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala will spend the day at his ancestral home, 'Sargam' at Chennithala in Alappuzha district. He will relish Onasadya with his mother Devaki Amma, wife Anitha, elder son Dr. Rohit and his wife Dr. Sheeja. Chennithala's younger son Ramit is in New Delhi preparing for the finals of the UPSC civil service examination scheduled for next week.
KPCC president Mullapally Ramachandran will dine with his wife Usha and daughter at his home at Vatakara.
On Uthradam day, Mullapally was busy with party programmes in Kannur district.
Former chief minister and AICC general secretary Oommen Chandy went to Ernakulam with wife Mariamma, son Chandy Oommen, elder daughter Maria Oommen and family. His younger daughter, Achu Oommen, is in Dubai.
"Like the previous years, we will celebrate Onam at our Poojappura home along with 15 cancer patients of Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram. It is being held with the support of Priyadarshini Forum, Abu Dhabi," Chandy Oommen, a Supreme Court lawyer, told DC.
Sreedharan Pillai did not want to enjoy the day with his wife Reetha and children who are in Kozhikode. He told DC that he would have a 'working' Onam with Hari after the party managed to increase the membership drive by 10.40 lakh.
"I reached Pala on Monday and have been campaigning for the BJP candidate. Last year also, there was no Onam for me due to the floods. We will have Thiruvonam sadya at the home of a party worker at Pala," he said.
