Maharashtra cop, who underwent sex change surgery, becomes father

Mumbai: Maharashtra cop, who underwent a sex change surgery three years ago to become a man, is now a father to a baby girl. After receiving approval from the state government in 2018, the constable underwent sex-change surgery, a process involving three surgeries between 2018 and 2020 and married in the same year. I am happy that I have become a father now and my family is also thrilled, he said.

Constable Lalit Salve, formerly named Lalita, joined the Maharashtra Police in 2010 and has been posted at Majalgaon city police station in Beed district. He became a father on January 15.

Speaking to reporters, Salve said, “My journey from being a woman to a man was full of struggles. During this time, I was blessed to have many people who supported me. My wife Seema wished to have a child. I am happy that I have become a father now. My family is thrilled.”

Raised as a girl, Salve noticed changes in her body in 2013. Medical tests confirmed the presence of the Y chromosome, which is typically found in males. Doctors had said that Salve had gender dysphoria and advised a sex reassignment surgery.

Salve underwent three surgeries from 2018 to 2020 after getting permission from the state government. Initially, Salve’s application for a sex reassignment surgery was rejected by her superiors, who termed it strange. However, she moved the Bombay High Court against it and also made an appeal to then chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, who asked the director general of police to make an exception in Salve’s case and retain him in service as a male constable after the sex change procedure is completed.

After the sex change, Salve married Seema from Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (then known as Aurangabad) on February 16, 2019.
