Karnataka: High speed internet for gram panchayats

Nearly 4300 gram panchayats have been provided with high speed FTTH (Fiber To The Home) connectivity to digitally connect rural Karnataka.

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government on Tuesday said that nearly 4300 gram panchayats have been provided with high speed FTTH (Fiber To The Home) connectivity to digitally connect rural Karnataka, on the second day of its annual IT event, Bengaluru ITE.biz 2016.

BSNL signed an MoU with the Karnataka State Electronics Development Corporation Limited (KEONICS) to extend connections to nearly 30,000 villages. “To add to this we have connected 4,300 gram panchayats out of 5631. 1500 more will be complete by March 2017,” said P. Nagaraju, ITS, CGM of BSNL.

The state announced that 11 gram panchayats will be provided with rural Wi-Fi services to encourage village level entrepreneurs to sell their products online. Gram panchayats in Mysuru, Tumakuru, Gadag, Ballari, Kalaburgi and Bagalkot will benefit form the Wi-Fi services.

A few gram panchayats in districts such as Mysuru, Tumakuru, Gadag, Ballari, Kalaburgi and Bagalkot will benefit form the Wi-Fi services.
