Madurai: Observing that the apex court did not prevent the high court from hearing cases relating to demonetisation of currency notes, the Madurai Bench of the Madras high court directed the Central government to file their response on a petition seeking to declare Rs 2,000 notes as invalid for using Devanagari form of numerals without passing any law in parliament for using it for any official purpose.
"We are not going into the policy matter pending in the apex court on whether the government decision on demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 is valid or not," said Justice S.Nagamuthu.
The Supreme court does not bar the high courts from hearing other cases related to demonetisation issues, the judge told ASG, G.R. Swaminathan when he argued that they have filed a transfer petition to hear all pending cases including this case in the apex court.
ASG told the court the additional SG, Rajagopal would appear in this case and requested the judge to adjourn the case. The court posted the next hearing of the case to December 2.
