Kerala: Seven colleges don't have ten students

14 colleges secure admission of only 25 students

KOCHI: The figures after the admission in self-financing engineering colleges in the third and final allotment by the Commissioner of Entrance Examinations (CEE) reveal that seven colleges have been able to secure only less than 10 students in all branches put together while one college could lure just 10 students out of a total number of 114 SF engineering colleges.

These are Hindusthan College of Engineering, Kulathupuzha (5 students admitted out of total seats of 132), Indira Gandhi Institute of Engineering and Technology for Women, Kothamangalam (5 out of 133 seats), KMP College of Engineering, Perumbavoor (2 out of 175 seats), Mount Zion College of Engineering, Kozhuvallur, Chengannur (9 out of 99 seats), Pankaja Kasthuri College of Engineering and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram (7 out of 132 seats), Shahul Hameed Memorial Engineering College, Kadakkal (1 out of 165 seats), Younus College of Engineering, Thalachira, Kollam (5 out of 99 seats) and Nirmala College of Engineering, Chalakkudy (10 out of 165 seats.)

15 self-financing engineering colleges on top

There are a 14 other SF colleges who could secure admission of only 25 or less students in all branches put together which shows at the pathetic state of affairs. These are Aryanet Institute of Technology, Mundoor, Palakkad (20 students out of a total of 165 seats), Axis College of Engineering and Technology, Thrissur (20 out of 378 seats), Baselios Thomas I Catholicose College of Engineering and Technology, Koothattukulam (16 out of 165 seats), Christ Knowledge City for Women, Kuzhoor ((14 out of 99 seats), Holy Kings College of Engineering and Technology, Muvattupuzha (25 out of 231 seats), Ilahia School of Science and Technology, Muvattupuzha (13 out of 165), Jai Bharath College of Management and Engineering Tech, Perumbavoor (23 out of 198), K R Gouri Amma College of Engineering, Thuravoor (15 out of 166), Kottayam Institute of Technology and Science, Pallikathode, Kottayam (20 out of 231).

The list also includes MG College of Engineering, Thiruvallom (11 out of 99 seats), Matha College of Technology, North Paravur (19 out of 198), Muslim Association College of Engineering, Venjaramoodu (20 out of 165), Travancore Engineering College, Oyoor, Kollam (17 out of 198 seats) and Younus Institute of Technology, Kannanaloor, Kollam (25 out of 132 seats). There are a total of 15 SF engineering colleges having secured over 75 per cent admission (See chart).

There are 85 out of the 114 colleges that have failed to secure 50 percent admission, pointing to the sorry state of affairs in the SF engineering education sector. Out of the total number of 24,468 engineering seats in the 114 self-financing engineering colleges, only 10,150 students have been admitted while 14,318 seats remain vacant, after the final third phase of allotment by the CEE.
