KOZHIKODE: Following the shootout incident at Nilambur which took the lives of two Maoists leaders, security had been beefed up in Perambra, Peruvennamuzhi and Koorachundu police stations in the rural area. There was intelligence report that Maoists might go for a retort in the areas where they have a presence. Additional manpower has been given to the three stations, particularly in nights. “We are on guard. All precautionary measures have been ensured in the wake of the Nilambur incident,” said Kozhikode Rural police Chief N. Vijayakumar.
The forest area comprising of Kakkayam, Muthukad and Peruvennamuzhi were said to be a temporary halt of Maoists and thunder bolt along with police had combed the area few months ago. Local people had complained of noticing strangers at Pannikottur colony and Peruvenna-muzhi forest reserve earlier. Six months back, large number of posters supporting Maoists was found in the interior areas of Perambra. “We are taking no chances. But there is no reason to panic,” said Peruvennamuzhi SHO, Rajan K.K.
Perambra has a history of Naxalites' strike where CPI ML members attacked Kayanna police station on February 28, 1976 to protest the dark period of emergency. The sensational murder of REC student P. Rajan was believed to be held under police custody at Kakkayam camp following his arrest in the police station attack. According to intelligence inputs, the region has a number of Naxalite supporters. Kakkayam and Poozhithod easily connect to Wayanad through forest.
