Students miffed by SCOLE Kerala entry woes

Students are left in the lurch as the online application process needs a bank account to complete the application process.

MALAPPURAM: Thousands of students who could not make it to the Higher Secondary allotment list for the admission to regular Plus One in schools in the district are troubled over technical hassles in the application procedures to the open higher secondary course of State Council for Open and Lifelong Education (SCOLE) - Kerala. Majority of 20,000 students, who tried to register with SCOLE Kerala as private students, have been left in the lurch as the online application process seeks mandatory bank account details of students to complete the application process. The students have to shed at least Rs 1,000 to open a bank account to register with the open higher secondary course. The registration fee remains only Rs 460 which is non-refundable.

Besides this, the SCOLE has put July 31 as the last date for registration without fine while the supplementary allotments to Higher Secondary Schools are underway. Malappuram district, where around 35,000 eligible students remain at bay due to lack of enough Plus One seats across the 248 schools, has the highest number of enrollments to the open higher secondary course of SCOLE Kerala. “The deadline for the registration without fine should be extended to help the students who are mostly come from lower income families. They should also be given time till the completion of higher secondary allotments,” Kaja Mohyidheen, district patron of Parallel College Association said.

Meanwhile, of the 9,922 applicants, 2,126 students have been selected for the Plus One admission in schools in the supplementary allotments list published on Thursday. The government’s latest decision to increase 10 per cent more seats in higher secondary school in the district will not be sufficient to meet the demand. The government had earlier increased 20 per cent seats. Despite this around 20,000 students had to resort to other higher education options.
