Chennai: In a sudden twist, the Madras High Court Advocates’ Association (MHAA) on Wednesday decided to take part in the general body meeting of joint action committee of advocates association of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in Thanjavur on Thursday and take further action as per the resolutions which would be passed in the meeting.
A resolution was adopted in an extraordinary general body meeting of MHAA.
The association also demanded that no criminal action be initiated against those who participated in the peaceful agitation on Monday and all those remanded should be released immediately.
The association has also demanded that all suspension orders and disciplinary proceedings passed by Bar Council of India and Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry against advocates who took part in various agitations in 2015-2016 be withdrawn unconditionally.
While expressing solidarity with the 126 suspended advocates, nearly 800 advocates led by senior advocate R. Vaigai submitted a representation to State Bar Council on Wednesday expressing solidarity with the ongoing peaceful protests against the rules of conduct.
In the memorandum, they alleged it was “illegally framed” by Madras high court and pursuant to the “illegal suspension” of 126 advocates State-wide, “we, the undersigned members of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Bar request the Bar council to suspend us from practice until the new rules are revoked.”
The representation also demanded the revocation of the orders suspending 126 advocates on July 24 and 40 lawyers on various occasions in 2015-2016. They have also demanded release of five advocates arrested and remanded to judicial custody on Tuesday for taking part in the agitation.
Bail plea of five advocates dismissed
The principal sessions court on Wednesday dismissed bail petition of five advocates - Karunakaran, vice-president, George Town Bar association, Ashok Kumar, Kishore, Yasar Arafat, and Om Prakash. They were arrested on Tuesday for staging demonstration opposite the high court campus on Monday.
