Operation Swasthi rehabilitates 160

The rehabilitated also include three mentally challenged women.

Kozhikode: Nearly 160 people abandoned in different parts of the city were rehabilitated in three phases as part of ‘Operation Swasthi’ launched by the police here. Supported by Santhwanam charitable trust, Chathamnagalam, the campaign ended on Sunday with the rehabilitation of another 20 elderly and mentally challenged persons from the streets. The rehabilitated also include three mentally challenged women.

“Three mentally challenged men were also taken to the Government mental health centre. Three persons were affected with TB and were taken to Beach (Government General hospital) hospital. Six others were taken to an old age home in Nilambur. Two men from Palakkad were sent back to their houses after informing their families,” said trust chairman P.V. Sudheer. Nearly 1,700 such people were tracked in the city limits, officials said. The tracked persons, male and female, were brought to police stations or schools and given a bath, then a haircut and clothes to wear. The first of the ‘Care’ session was held on January 29. Efforts were also being made to get them Aadhaar registration, and reuniting them with their families, officials said.
