NSS no to Public Service Commission recruitment

Nair body for status quo on entry of women in Sabarimala

Kottayam: The NSS has urged the government to cancel the decision to disband the devaswom recruitment board and entrust the appointments to the Public Service Commission. Opposing any change to the ban on entry of women of menstrual age into the temple NSS urged the government to take steps to protect the custom and tradition of the hill shrine.

A resolution to this effect, presented by general secretary G. Sukumaran Nair at the budget meeting of the NSS held at Perunna on Saturday, was passed at the delegates' meeting. The resolution demanded to retain the existing Devaswom Recruitment Board.

"If the appointments are left to the PSC, there will be charges that a secular institution is interfering in the appointments of a Hindu religious body. By disbanding the Recruitment Board, the future of thousands of job applicants will be in jeopardy. The functioning of the devaswom boards will be affected. The devaswom minister's statement that the recruitment boards will be dissolved is a challenge to Hindu society," the resolution said.

NSS director board member N.V. Ayyappan Pillai presented another resolution demanding no change in the rituals at Sabarimala temple. "Rituals, which are being continued for so many years, should be continued taking into account the special status of the temple," the resolution said. Mr Sukumaran Nair, in his speech, said that the NSS will oppose the wrong policies of the LDF government.

The resolution criticised the previous UDF government for its soft stand towards communal forces. "Though the issues, including of corruption and sex scandals and the anti- incumbency factors were discussed before the elections, the UDF government faced electoral setbacks owing to its soft approach towards communal forces," Mr Nair said and added that the people wanted a corruption-free government and a peaceful atmosphere.

NSS president P.N. Narendranathan Nair presided over the meeting. The delegates' meet passed the budget for 2015- 2016 financial year with a revenue of Rs 98 crore and Rs 15 lakh and expenditure of the same amount. Nine members of the director board were unanimously elected to fill the vacancies.
