Thazhathangady Muslim Juma Masjid once again opens doors for women

The decision by Thazhathangady Muslim Juma Masjid is seen as a rare gesture shown by a Masjid in Kerala.

Kottayam: Heeding popular demand, the Thazhathangady Muslim Juma Masjid will once again keep its doors open to women devotees to see its architectural marvel. Besides women from 1,500 families attached to the Masjid, devotees from Thodupuzha, Kozhikode and even Malappuram had come to see the Hindu temple-style architectural splendour in teakwood when it was opened three times on Sunday.

The Masjid will receive them in the sanctum again on May 8 between prayers, 8 am to 12 pm, 1.30 pm to 3.30 pm and at 4.30 pm to 6.30 pm. Inscriptions on the Meesan Stones here are in Arabic. The verses of Quran carved out in the wood are among other features.

“The Masjid maintenance committee took the decision to allow women following a popular demand,” said Sirajuddhin Hassaini, its imam. The decision to allow into the main prayer hall is seen as a rare gesture shown by a Masjid in Kerala.
