Kannur SP Sanjay Kumar Gurudin warns netas over unrest

The warning comes after repeated attempts to curb the violence failed.

KANNUR: The Kannur police have appealed to the political parties not to take law into their hands and desist from aggravating the violence in the district. District police chief Sanjay Kumar Gurudin sent letters to the leaders of all the political parties in Kannur on Monday night, including CPM district secretary P. Jayarajan and BJP district president P. Sathyaprakasan, following an all-party peace talk convened by Collector Mir Mohammed Ali at the collectorate conference hall.

The police chief said stringent action would be taken against those sending hate messages on the social media and other platforms and spreading provocative and false information, creating enmity and aggravating violence. The warning comes after repeated attempts to curb the violence failed.

The letter says that the violence is likely to be exploited by anti-nationals and the situation may worsen. “There should not be provocative speeches, statements and dialogues from the leaders instigating violence. Your party is also responsible for maintaining peace in the district. Those who are objecting to the efforts by the police to restore peace also would have to face tough action,” says the letter.

“Glorifying the accused and giving rousing welcome to those who are released on bail for political violence is equivalent to encouraging crime. The leaders should be responsible to avoid such events and speeches glorifying them. All the political parties should consider the logic behind involving in clashes in the name of the illegally-constructed memorials, flagstaff and bus shelters,” the letter adds.
