Chennai: Women IT engineers, who find their job timings uncomfortable, are turning towards teaching profession as some of them chose to study B.Ed. after quitting their jobs.
Tamil Nadu government has reserved 20 per cent B.Ed. seats for B.E. graduates from this year. More than 150 BE graduates have applied for two-year B.Ed. course this year. Only 75 candidates attended the B.Ed. admission counselling on Wednesday. Including 45 women graduates, totally 69 BE graduates got admission to the B.Ed. courses
Many women engineering graduates, who attended the counselling, were formerly working in software companies. They cited family commitments and shift timings in IT companies as reasons for quitting their jobs.
Revathi from Ayyappanthangal in Chennai quit her job at Infosys as the timings were not suitable to her as she has two children. “I now want to pursue B.Ed. as I think teaching job is more suitable for me,” she said.
She got the seat in Maths subject in Lady Willingdon Institute of Advanced Study of Education, Chennai under the 20 per cent reservation for BE graduates.
Anupriya worked in HCL for some time. She quit her job as she thought it would be difficult to continue work after marriage. She got the B.Ed. seat in Stella Matutina College of Education in Chennai.
Narayana Prasad, father of Shruthi from Mayiladuthurai said her daughter quit the IT job in Polaris as she had to take more work pressures. “Joining B.Ed. after finishing BE may not be seen as a good move. But teacher’s job is more secure compared to IT jobs,” he said.
V. Yamini from Thiruninravur finished her B.Tech. in food processing and joined a private company. But she quit as her work timings were not comfortable after marriage. R. Dinesh from Tiruvallur finished his BE in 2014. But he is yet to find a job. As job opportunities for BE graduates are not good he decided to join B.Ed course to enhance his job prospects.
