UAE resident undergoes Birmingham hip resurfacing

The physical instructor by profession underwent a lot of medical treatments, which ended in vain and hence opted for the surgery.

Chennai: Fifty-one-year-old Robert Bailey, a native of UAE, was suffering from pain in his left hip over the last five years that not only affected his daily life, but also his career of a physical education teacher.

The physical instructor by profession underwent a lot of medical treatments, which ended in vain and hence opted for the surgery. He was acutely aware that a standard hip replacement will not be compatible with activity level needed in the line of his profession.

His only option was having a Birmingham hip resurfacing, which is a complex joint reconstructive surgery done at specialized centers. Robert underwent the surgery at SIMS hospital recently and is back on his feet after complete recovery.

Speaking on the surgical treatment Dr Vijay C Bose, joint director and senior consultant, Institute of Orthopaedics SIMS said, “The Birmingham Hip Resurfacing technique offers many advantages to the patient, saving bone stock as the hip joint bone is not removed and only a cap is fitted on the femoral head, which serves like a cartilage replacement. The procedure allows the patient to be very active post-surgery and the patient can continue to run, practice Yoga and play contact sports etc. These key advantages set the resurfacing technique and implant apart from its total hip replacement counterparts.”
