Refund stares at Kannur and Karuna Medical Colleges

Final decision after fate of revision petition filed by colleges in court.

Thiruvananthapuram: With the Supreme Court cancelling admissions to 180 seats in Kannur and Karuna Medical Colleges, managements would have to refund the fee collected from students in these seats. However, the final decision on the refund would be taken only after a verdict on the revision petition being filed by the two colleges in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court on Thursday made it clear that they would not make amendments to the order to cancel the admissions made to 180 seats. Court made this clear while considering the plea of Kannur Medical College.

The order was issued after considering all documents. Hence, it was not possible for any amendment. However, the court made it clear that the petitioners were free to go for a revision petition. However, with the state government making it clear that they have nothing to do with the issues between the management and students in these colleges, the management will have to directly deal with students. There are chances for litigation between students and managements on repayment of fee already collected. Justice R. Rajendra Babu, the present chairman of the Admission Supervisory Committee told this newspaper that the committee could take a decision on intervening in the issue only after examining the verdict of the Supreme Court.

At present, I have not seen the judgement, Justice Babu said. While all the 150 seats in Kannur Medical College would remain vacant this year, Karuna College can retain admissions in 70 seats. However, Karuna College can admit only 70 students next academic year. This was because the apex court directed Karuna Medical College to admit next year the 30 students, whose claims for admissions were endorsed by Justice James for 2016-17, but were not accommodated by the management. These students would not have to write the NEET examinations for eligibility for admissions in these seats.
