Kerala: Cooperative banks depositors can get money on emergencies

Similarly, coupons in the form of credit card will be launched to meet immediate expenses.

Kozhikode: The primary cooperative banks in the district have decided to provide relief to the depositors for emergency purposes. A meeting of the presidents and secretaries of the banks here on Monday agreed to allow the depositors to withdraw money from the district cooperative bank concerned for needs like marriage and hospital expenses. “The account holder has to furnish an application stating the purpose. The bank will forward the application to the district bank which will issue cheques in the name of the person/firm to whom the customer needs to pay the money,” said Mr P. Pradeep Kumar, senior manager of Kozhikode district cooperative bank.

For instance, if the customer has to buy gold, the district bank will issue cheque in the name of the jewellery shop. There will be no maximum limit for the withdrawal. The temporary facility will come in force as early as possible after consultation with the North Malabar Chamber of Commerce and other trading organisations. Similarly, coupons in the form of credit card will be launched to meet immediate expenses. The meeting was held to prepare a draft of the decisions taken at the meeting convened by the Chief Minister and the Cooperation Minister in Thiruvananthapuram last week.
