All party team to meet PM Narendra Modi

BJP walks out from meeting called to discuss crisis in coop banking sector.

Thiruvananthapuram: An all-party delegation from Kerala will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the crisis in the cooperative banking sector after the demonetisation. After the all-party meet, where BJP leaders Kummanam Rajasekharan and general secretary K. Surendran staged a walkout alleging bid to cover up black money, chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the government would not compromise on its stand.

"If the income tax department demands the details of remittances, they will get it," Mr Vijayan told reporters, adding the cooperatives were the backbone of the state's economy. He said the all-party delegation for Delhi would be finalised on Tuesday after the special session of the State Assembly to decide the future course of action. The team, excluding the BJP, would also be meeting finance minister Arun Jaitley. Mr Rajasekharan alleged that both the LDF and the UDF had joined hands in support of the black money holders.

At the meeting, he wanted the state government to follow the Reserve Bank of India norms in the cooperative sector. BJP leaders are also going to Delhi separately to oppose concessions the co-operative sector demands. Except for the BJP, the LDF and UDF constituents have decided to work jointly to adopt a resolution in the Assembly.

Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala said after the meeting that the Congress party would not allow the "highly effective" co-operative sector destroyed. He said it was unfortunate that the BJP had decided to stay away when several lakhs of account holders in co-operative banks suffered. Stating that the government was not against any verification of accounts in the cooperative banks by the IT sleuths, the chief minister said the cooperative banks would challenge the RBI restrictions in the Supreme Court.
