Police said that he escaped with minor injuries.

Chennai: Tension prevailed inside the Thiru Vi ka nagar police station on Sunday evening after a crime suspect attempted suicide inside the station premises by slashing his neck using a broken tubelight. Police said that he escaped with minor injuries.

P. Saravanan (29) of Kamarajar Nagar 1st street here is a history sheeter involved in several criminal cases including murder, robbery, and waylaying, police sources said.

He has cases pending against him in Madhavaram, Thiru vi ka nagar police stations and was detained under the Goondas act last year.

Saravanan had come out on bail last month. Meanwhile, on Sunday evening, a police patrol team was on duty in Gopalapuram neighbourhood near Perambur when they picked up Saravanan on suspicion. He took on his heels on seeing the patrol team and the police team picked him up after a chase, a police official said.

He was taken to the police station and was being questioned when he took the personnel there by surprise.

He took an old used tubelight lying in the corner, broke it and slashed his neck with it. Police personnel rushed him to a hospital nearby for treatment where he was treated for his injuries. Further investigations are on.

A week ago, in a similar incident in neighbouring Kancheepuram district, a suspect detained in a bike theft case attempted suicide by slashing his neck with a blade inside the taluk police station.
