Kochi: Waste not fully removed

Siju Thomas, district coordinator of State Suchitwa Mission, told DC that more than 95 per cent of flood garbage has been removed.

Kochi: Even as district collector Muhammad Y Safirulla has given September 15 as the deadline to complete waste removal from flood-affected areas across the district, interior areas in panchayats are still dotted with heaps of garbage. Waste removal is still incomplete in many areas in Kadungalloor and Puthanvelikara, the worst affected panchayats. "Though garbage from main roadsides and open spaces has been cleared, many interior areas still have heaps of inorganic waste from households," said Radhakrishnan K, a resident of Kadungalloor.

Siju Thomas, district coordinator of State Suchitwa Mission, told DC that more than 95 per cent of flood garbage has been removed. "Nearly 8000 tonnes of inorganic waste from flood-hit areas, 2400 truckloads, have been shifted to the Kochi Corporation's Brahmapuram solid waste treatment plant so far," he said. "However, waste removal is not complete in few panchayats as people are still dumping waste in the collection spots. This free waste removal can't continue for more days and the facility will wind up in one or two days," he added.

There are complaints that few industrial units in Eloor, Edayar stretch had transported industrial waste along with the household inorganic waste to Brahmapuram plant.

Garbage from flood-hit godowns and shope was transported to Kerala Enviro Infrastructure Ltd at Ambalamedu, an agency to treat hazardous waste.
