CHMM College: Girl dies in Freshers' Day fete

Car with five revellers mows down student.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The freshers’ day turned deadly for a girl student of the CHMM College for Advanced Studies, Chavarcode, near Varkala. Meera Mohan, 24, MCA student, who was hit by the car of five revellers on Thursday, died at a private hospital on Friday morning. The police arrested car driver Afzal, 19, second-year B.Com student of same college. He was booked under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder). As per the Ayiroor police, Meera was sitting on her scooter a few hundred metres from the college around 11 am on Thursday. She was waiting for her friend to fetch some photostat copies for a college project.

A Maruti Swift Dzire car which sped out of the campus with five students rammed the two-wheeler flinging away Meera. The eyewitnesses near the incident manhandled them alleging that they were under the influence of alcohol. The police said that the vehicle lost control as it was speeding. Meera of Sreeragom, near Kashimadom temple, Kadakavoor, leaves behind her father Mohan, mother Anitha and sister Thara.

The body will be handed over to the relatives after post-mortem. The college management said that the accident had nothing to do with the freshers’ day revelry. It may be recalled that in a similar incident at College of Engineering, Trivandrum, a student Thasni Basheer was killed by a four-wheeler driven by her college mates during Onam revelry in 2015.
