Mission 2020 to include action plan for transgenders

Gender equality is not just for a man or a woman, it is applicable for every human being.

KOZHIKODE: Lack of proper support, poor realisation of issues and hostile reaction by the general public prevailing in the society have been identified as the major challenges transgenders face. In a meeting called by district collector, in association with district legal service authority and Kasaba Janamythri Police, transgenders openly talked about various issues they faced. Speaking at the meeting district judge K Soman said: "It is high time the people's attitude changed towards the transgender people".

Gender equality is not just for a man or a woman, it is applicable for every human being. Just like any other citizen, transgenders too deserve a decent occupation, proper education and food and health, he added. Mr Soman appreciated the efforts made by district administration to start a new clinic at the Kozhikode Beach Hospital exclusively for transgenders. District collector informed that a new action plan for transgender will be included in Mission 2020.

In order to help them find an occupation, skill development training programmes will also be conducted, he added. Addressing he meeting Seetha, a transgender activist, said: "I earn a decent amount as salary. I am a graduate. I work in a private company. But, I had to bring my friend and his wife as a guarantor to get an accommodation, and that too after marathon discussions with the house owner. This is a sad state that many of us face. Similarly, we encounter a lot of issues on a daily basis due to the negligence from the public," she added.
