Conservation works at Macca Masjid begin

The restoration will be carried out by Laxmi Hericon under the overall supervision of the State Department of Archaeology and Museums (DAM).

Hyderabad: Conservation of the historic Macca Masjid has started with Laxmi Hericon Pvt Ltd, a Mumbai based company, undertaking the preliminary work.
The work on the exterior will begin first.

The restoration will be carried out by Laxmi Hericon under the overall supervision of the State Department of Archaeology and Museums (DAM). DAM has been allotted three rooms of the madrasa on the south side of the mosque compound for the project office. Two more rooms have been allotted on the north side of the premises.

“We have decided to work on the exterior and the terrace. So far, we have cleaned up the madrasa building. The roof is leaking and we cannot stock our material and keep project-related documents and electronic gadgets inside,” said Syed Sharjeen Yawar, project engineer of the company.

Once the scaffolding is put up, a temporary shed will be erected on the terrace of the mosque. “This is essential because if it rains water should not seep through the roof into the main prayer hall,” said Mr Yawar.

A new gate is being installed on the southern side facing the Panch Mohalla market so that material can be brought in from here.

Pigeons have made the mosque their home and the birds’ excreta is damaging the structure. “We have not yet decided how to deal with this. We have informed the mosque management about it,” said an official.
