Thrissur Pooram is not a myth, it is real

The ritual made no compromise on its unique line up of caparisoned elephants and fireworks after fending off threats to ban them.

Thrissur: Thrissur Pooram, the magnificent annual spectacle of colours, crowds and music on Sunday treated tens of hundreds of devotees and pooram buffs to their hearts and eyes full with its traditional grandeur. The annual ritual made no compromise on its unique line up of caparisoned elephants and fireworks after fending off the threats of a ban on them.

It all began in the morning with eight small poorams taken out from different temples in and around the town crisscrossing the Thekkinkkad Maidan at the heart of the city. They were followed by the major participants Thiruvambadi and Paramekkavu Devaswoms setting off for 'Madathil Varavu' and 'Pooram Ezhunallippu? respectively.

The ‘melams’ taken out with the accompaniment of caparisoned elephants donning ‘nettipattams’ on their forehead of the constituent ‘cherupoorams’ set the tone for the enthralling musical events Madathil Varavu panchavadyam and Ilanjithara Melam. It was followed in the evening by Kudamattam, the exchange of colourful umbrellas which enth-ralled the spectators with the variety and innovation. The fireworks display is scheduled for early on Monday.
