Probe into girl testing HIV+ at Regional Cancer Centre

The girl was subjected to blood transfusion 40 times at the RCC.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Medical College police on Friday inspected the Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) and sought information on the alleged negligence that led to a nine-year-old contracting HIV. The girl was subjected to blood transfusion 40 times at the RCC. A team under Cybercity assistant commissioner of police, A. Pramod Kumar has issued a notice seeking treatment details during each of her visits to the RCC. Also, they were reaching out to the people who donated blood to her to identify the source of the infection.

The infection was apparently contracted during a transfusion that took place in March this year. “The process could be time consuming as it involves several cross verifications. We will also need to find out whether there was negligence from individual staffers,” said senior police officials. Apart from taking legal actions, the police will also recommend to the medical board to act against erring staffers. The probe will also involve evidence gathering from Vandanam medical college at Alappuzha where the girl had first sought treatment. The blood samples and medical records of the victim will be sent to Hyderabad for advanced verification.
