Bengaluru: It has been more than 10 days after the garbage processing plant in Kannahalli near Magadi Road caught fire, but the BBMP is still struggling to completely put out the blaze.
On Friday, BBMP officials maintained that it may take another four to five days to bring the situation under control. According to sources, despite pressing over 80 men into service day and night, the BBMP has been unable to put off the fire.
“When the plant caught fire on October 4, it was expected that normalcy will be restored by October 10, but even now workers are struggling to completely put off the fire. As per the officials’ plan, the plant should have restarted by Wednesday. However, so far only 70 per cent of the fire has been doused,” sources said.
When the plant caught fire, the BBMP said that around 4 tonnes of refuse derived fuel (RDF) was stored at the plant. Sources said the stored fuel too was posing problems to fire fighters.
Meanwhile, as the fire continues to rage, the BBMP Solid Waste Management officials are worried about garbage disposal.
“Since the BBMP made alternate arrangements to dispose of the garbage only till Monday, they were unprepared to deal without the plant for 10 days. Also, with the fire expected to be completely put off only after five days, the BBMP needs an action plan immediately. Over 200 tonnes of garbage that was sent to the plant has not been disposed of properly and the recent festival garbage has added to the woes,” an official said.
