Kerala: CPM plans mega Yoga Day to outdo Centre

The first edition of Mass Yoga meet was held in Delhi last year.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The CPM in association with the Indian Martial Arts Academy is gearing up for a mega yoga event to commemorate the International Yoga Day on June 21. The mega event to be held at the Poojapura grounds will have a live demonstration of yoga by over 500 persons drawn from various parts of the district.

CPM is quite keen to organise such events this time around as it does not want the BJP led government at the Centre to walk away with all the credit for preserving and popularising Yoga. The Marxists are in no mood to sit idle on a day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi would be leading hundreds of yoga enthusiasts at a special yoga session organised by the Central government in Chandigarh on June 21. The first edition of Mass Yoga meet was held in Delhi last year.

While the Indian Martial Arts Academy is jointly organising the event, the entire show is being planned by the CPM leadership. CPM district committee member Karmana Hari and Chala area secretary S.A. Sundan will be heading the organising committee as chairman and convenor respectively.

It also has CPM heavyweights in the district including district panchayat president V.K. Madhu, CITU district president V. Sivankutty, secretary Jayan Babu and Mahila Samithi president S. Pushpalatha. While the Centre has already decided to play safe by not making surya namaskar and Om chants compulsory this time, the event in Thiruvananthapuram is likely to skip both.
